The nursery will be closed until 11th October. Orders are welcome to secure plants and will be dispatched from the 14th.
Evergreen, height to 60cm.
This is a beautiful fern and very rare in cultivation. It is closely related to Dryopteris erythrosora and seems to prefer much the same conditions though probably preferring the more sheltered spots. New growth is a stunning brick-red colour. Reports from America suggest this produced new fronds late in the season though for plants grown here they seem to produce new fronds year round. This could be that the maritime conditions in the South of Ireland are ideal (maybe they like a lot of rain!) so for those growing them elsewhere frond production may be less.
They seem to prefer a neutral soil and dappled shade. I have great success with this planted under hardy Fuchsia shrubs.
A beautiful fern that must be tried!
